Avoch Heritage Association

The Association was formed in 1989 by local people who were keen to promote interest in the heritage of Avoch and the surrounding area. Each year since then, a dedicated, voluntary group of people has gathered together information, photographs and artefacts to mount a summer exhibition.

The first exhibition covered the life of Sir Alexander Mackenzie who is buried in Avoch and who did much to support the village during his later years. In 1997, Dr John Donaldson of Canada donated a canoe to the Association. In this canoe, he had retraced the voyages covered by Sir Alexander 200 years previously. This gift inspired the Heritage committee to research more deeply into Sir Alexander’s life, resulting in the 1998 exhibition

The association publishes a range of material depicting the history and heritage of the village. Recent publications include:
