By 1900 the English language was being used in Highland schools instead of Gaelic. It was said, “the Gaelic language is beautiful, but the people do not want it”. In 1918, however, the Education Act said that both languages had to be taught in Gaelic-speaking areas. Again in the mid 1900s, there was a decline in Gaelic usage, but the last few years have seen a revival of the language once again.
Although in the inverness area, Gaelic was in use in many families, Avoch itself used English (along with the Avoch dialect) as the main language. Gaelic speakers in the Avoch schools tended to come from the farming community in outlying districts.
