Mrs Jeannie Reid - The womenfolk of Avoch had to work extremely hard. In addition to brining up a large family, Mrs Reid like many others, made long treks outwith the village carrying fish in her basket (murlach). These would be bartered for oatmeal or vegetables. The same murlach could also be used for gathering firewood.
